Typical Accounting Interview Questions

So, what are some typical accounting interview questions? That is what we are going to focus on today. Maybe you are switching careers and accounting is new for you.

How can you prepare for those accountant interview questions that are very specific? Maybe you have been at your employer for several years and have recently been displaced. Jumping back in the interview game might appear a bit scary for you.

While it is difficult to cover all of the accounting interview questions and answers, I am going to paint a broad stoke over areas that you need to be crisp on. Again, there are many accountant interview questions and answers out there, but place your focus here.

Typical Accounting Interview Questions

1. How is your technical side?
This is one of the popular accountancy interview questions asked today. As technology advances so is the need for accounting and technology to intersect. There are more and more blended roles being created every year. While you do not have to be a programmer, you still need to have a healthy appetite for being techno-savvy. If you were a part of a software conversion at whatever level, then describe the experience. Just remember as the years pass on this is going to be one of the most popular accounting job interview questions.

2. Describe for me your attention to detail. While this can feel like stating the obvious, it is still a valid question that could be asked in a different way. This is one of the most popular accounting interview questions out there. Be ready for it. I once had a candidate who answered this questions and said that they use sticky notes all over their computer monitor because they are not very organized and have a hard time remembering things.

That was a bad answer. An accountant with a bad memory is no better than a husband going to the grocery store for his wife without a shopping list in hand. It just doesn’t work.

3. Can you name any accounting processes you have developed or improved?
Among all of the accounting interview questions this can be the best one to be asked. It can really give you an opportunity to shine in the job interview. Hiring managers love to hear about how an accountant improved things. Whether it was shaving off 5 days on the month-end close process or figuring a way to get better reporting numbers to Upper Management, improving things is big. Sometimes these things go unnoticed so take some time to look back into your work history and see how you contributed success in this area.

4. What accounting software packages have you used?
At first glance, this may seem a lot like the first accounting interview question mentioned, but it is slightly different. One advantage of public accounting is the exposure to many different types of software packages from many different industries. This can also be true of what we would consider a “job hopper.” However, “job hopping” is becoming a misnomer with company restructuring becoming a norm. Still, having a thorough grasp on many different accounting software packages is a huge plus.

Interview makes almost everyone nervous, especially if one is not ready. Which means before going through the interview one must do his or her homework. Research about the company so that you would know how you can help the company, what skills you have to help the company. During the interview try to speak slowly, and give short answers. Stay calm and collected even if you’re not.
