Guys, I don't mean to be cute but we are in a serious recession. Companies are scared and rightly or wrongly are conserving cash and waiting for a firm signal that things have changed.

Pick up a copy of Fortune Magazine or Business Week and see how thin they are compared to a year and a half ago. Whereas before you had to search to find the articles now you have to search to find the ads.

But between the Fed and the federal government trillions, even tens of trillions of dollars have been committed to the economy. Whether long term that is a good thing is a different topic, but short term it will have an effect on the economy.

And with trillions of dollars of investable dollars on the sidelines when the turn happens it could be violent. Companies that cut to the bone will panic when they realize they need to hire to grow.

Whereas before there were no job offers now there may be many. This suggests that you keep up a steady effort and take advantage of tips such as the resume tips offerred here. It also suggests that when the first job offer comes in you might want to make sure it is the job you really want and will be around for many years.

It is really a nice article which would help those who posses a good qualification and experience but ignored due to the presentation/selling techniques of themselves.

Good work!!

I have used the same basic resume format for over 20 years after paying a "professional" a couple of hundred dollars to tweek. I still don't know if that was money well spent but the 28 agencies and recruiters that I keep in contact with all agree that my resume is excellent.

I have not made the mistakes you noted and I am also not getting any responses with my supposedly excellent resume. I am open to suggestion and insight from all of you experts out there.

@ Roman K.:
Check with your college career center so they can audit your resume. Then you need to go to linkedin to build your profile, join groups that are of interest to you and make contributions to the groups discussions that you feel comfortable with. Sometimes, if you are out of college you want to maybe aim a little lower as opposed to applying to your dream job. Sometimes you have to take a less desirable job because it's the stepping stone towards your dream job. Last but no least you have to be relentless in your job search...job searching is a full time job!

I absolutely agree with your point. I always have my candidates take a few moments and tailor their experience to the actual position. This technique also works well in removing information that would not be relevant for that particular position.

People make the mistake of getting so excited about an opportunity that they rush in getting their resume in there before making it right first. Thanks for the contribution

John:
Very good post right here. However I would like to make couple of comments in regard to #1: Lack of focus.
I just would go farther than you did by recommending prospective and current job seekers to tailor their resume to each job they are applying for. Two job announcements might have the same position title but might not share the same position profile. My advice is to stack your default resume up against the job descriptions and see how best you can modify your default resume so it will be in synch with the jobs profile. Doing this in conjunction with John's recommendations will significantly improve your chances of standing out of the pool of applicants.
