For those of you that do not know a fresher can also be referred to as “newbie, green, or fresh grad.” This month many new graduates will be entering the workforce for the first time. The question is “What is the best resume format for freshers?” If you are a new graduate it is very important that you get your resume right. Later on in your career you can rely more on networking to find a job, but when you are first getting started you do not always have the working relationships to rely on. I am going to share with you 4 keys to making your resume the best it possibly can be to land that job.
1. Accentuate your core skills. After the introduction paragraph, list 10-12 short bullet statements that really sell some of your core competencies. Think about your college classes and the area that you really seemed to excel. Also, if you have taken any specific excel or general accounting entrance tests share the details or scores if you have them. Do whatever you can to ensure that the qualifications you do have are listed in the top half of the first page in the resume.
2. Place your college degree as close to the top as possible. For many of you freshers it will be your biggest accomplishment to showcase. Too many fresh grads place their education at the bottom of the resume. It is true as you get more experience under your belt that you should eventually move it to the bottom of the resume, but for now, keep it at the top. Also, list some of your related coursework as it can make your resume look even more targeted.
3. Expound on any internship positions. I have met so many fresh grads that do not expound on their internship experience. You really need to highlight this as much as possible. Do not state things that are not true, but you should nonetheless sell your skills as much as possible. At the very least, do more then just list the place you interned. As you can see, a proper resume format for freshers is especially important.
4. Use action verbs wherever possible. It is also a good idea to make sure you are using compeling content. You need to use action verbs that move you emotionally. Instead of just stating “Responsible for….”, use powerful words like led, initiated, created, executed, and fostered. I also like to do the same thing with cover letters as well. You can find good cover letter examples online by doing a quick search. The cover letters that are the most compelling have bullet points that begin with action verbs in them
