The Four Diamonds of a Rewarding Life: Have You Discovered Them?
Acres of Diamonds is a classic book based on a lecture by Russell Conwell, Founder of Temple University. He tells a story of a man who sold his land and travelled a far way off in search of riches and wealth. He spent all that he had and finally came up empty. In an interesting twist, the man whom he had sold his land uncovered acres and acres of diamonds and became instantly wealthy. It was under his feet all along. What can we learn from this?
Moral: What you’re looking for just might be right under your feet (or buried within).
So, what’s up with the four diamonds you say? Well, as an Executive Recruiter I have had the privilege of meeting and interviewing hundreds of workplace professionals over the years from CFO, CEO to Financial Analyst. I have come to discover a consistent theme among all of them regardless of their income level. Each of them in one form or another were searching, desiring, and longing for four basic needs. I like to call them the four diamonds. Each of them are accessible to you right now…if you can learn how to look deep within to discover them..
Diamond #1: Purpose – meaning and significance with what they spend their time doing
Diamond #2: Passion – loving what they do and doing it with all their heart
Diamond #3: Productivity – doing what they do well and improving the process and others along the way
Diamond #4: Pace – enjoying the journey, learning the art of balance and deepening the relationships of those most important to them
Question: So, if it is really as easy as looking deep within, why haven’t more people discovered this?
Answer: Because most people or more concerned with making a living then designing a life. Besides, in order to discover diamonds it takes some digging and mining and who’s got time for that?
