Day 07 – 5 Career Change Ideas That You Can Use

by Jonathan on 7:00 am

Yesterday in our 30 day job search challenge, I had you blend together your passions, strengths, and personality into an ideal career. Today our focus is in expanding your options. Many workplace professionals feel “stuck” and they fail to see the many possibilities that are available to them

Are you stuck in your current career path? Are you looking for some career change ideas that you can use? How can you know when it is time to make a change in your career? I have counseled with thousands of workplace professionals. Many of which wondered how they ended up in the current position they were in. It is oftentimes easy to drift in our careers without even realizing it. In the matter of a few months or years we end up in a very different place then where our natural strengths lie. If you are in need of a career change, I want to offer you 5 career change ideas to get you going:

Day 07 – 5 Career Change Ideas That You Can Use

1. Same Industry, Different Company

Your Personality Matters for WorkSometimes when I am coaching a candidate I realize that they are not burned out on the type of work they have just lost motivation for one reason or another at their current company. Whether they were over-looked for a promotion, hadn’t received a raise in a few years, or just didn’t click with their supervisor, they really need to change companies and not careers. Take time to evaluate if that is true with you.

2. Same Industry, Alternative Role

Other times, you may just need a fresh new role in the same industry and company. Moving to a new internal job is the best type of career change for many people. Let’s face it, many of us do like change and variety. Setting up a new work flow process might be just the change that you need.

3. Different Industry, Similar Role

This may seem similar to point number one but it is different. In this type of career change you are looking for “transferable skills.” The job title will be much different and the industry served will be vastly different. An accountant that is really god with the details and numbers could also be a good fit for an investigation type role or even a details computer systems upgrade.

4. Different Industry, Additional Education

If you really struggle with the first three points above then you may need to pursue additional education to get where you want to be. For example an elementary teacher could attend nursing school in the evenings and summer in order to earn a RN degree. The nurturing element of teaching is transferable to nursing patients and would be a great career change.

5. Any Industry, Freelance Roles

This is a career change idea that is vastly growing in popularity. Mush of the popularity is due to two things. First, because more an more companies are training their employees to become much more specialized in a particular area. This specialization can be great for many different companies for you as a freelancer. Second, the world wide web can help to more easily communicate your service offerings and gain more clients.

DO IT NOW Task – Select Your Move

While I do want you to keep your options open, the task that I have for you today is to select your top two choices from the options above. As we move through the branding and marketing process of this challenge, my hope is that you will open your eyes to the possibilities that exists.
